Corso di Research Design and Methods in Political Science
A partire da marzo 2024 l’insegnamento di Political Science Research – Design and Methods (6 CFU), istituito presso il CdLM in Data Science, si svolgerà nell’ambito della Cattedra Jean Monnet EuDARe coordinata dal prof. Marcello Carammia e verrà pertanto ospitato nei locali del DSPS.
Il corso fornirà gli strumenti essenziali per condurre ricerche in scienza politica ed è aperto a tutti gli studenti interessati che possono sceglierlo come corso libero. Non sono richieste conoscenze pregresse di metodologia o statistica.
Attraverso lezioni frontali e sessioni laboratoriali gli studenti lavoreranno all’intero ciclo della ricerca: formulazione di un quesito di ricerca, costruzione di una teoria, scelta del disegno di ricerca più adatto al proprio problema, selezione e analisi dei dati. Durante il corso gli studenti saranno esposti alle più recenti tecniche per il disegno della ricerca e ad applicazioni fondamentali della data science. Nell’arco del corso gli studenti svilupperanno un progetto di ricerca originale, che sarà l’oggetto della valutazione finale.
Il corso avrà inizio il 27 marzo e si terrà mercoledì, giovedì e venerdì dalle 16.00 alle 18.00. Dalla terza settimana avranno inizio le sessioni di laboratorio e gli incontri del giovedì e venerdì dureranno un’ora in più.

Starting from March 2024, the course of Political Science Research – Design and Methods (6 CFU), part of the Master Programme in Data Science, will be part of the Jean Monnet Chair EuDARe coordinated by prof. Marcello Carammia e will therefore be hosted at the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
The course will provide the instruments needed to do research in political science, and it is open to all interested students who can choose it as an elective course. The course does not assume any previous knowledge of methodology or statistics.
The course will combine frontal teaching with lab sessions to expose students to the entire research cycle: formulation of a research question, construction of a theory, choice of a research design appropriate to the given problem, selection and analysis of empirical data. During the course, the students will be exposed to the most recent methods for research design and to fundamental applications of data science. Throughout the course, students will develop their own research project, which will be the object of the final assessment.
The course will start on 27th March and will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 16.00-18.00. Starting from the third week, the lab sessions will be starting and the Thu-Fri meetings will last one hour longer.
