Detailed Course Content

In order to depict the main features of Mediterranean Politics, Module 1 investigates relations between regional and global actors (EU, USA and Southern Mediterranean Countries, but also Russia and China), state and non-state actors (e.g. party politics, civil society organizations, transnational movements), processes in the area such as as region-building or democratization.

Module 1 offers the analytical and methodological basis of the Mediterranean Politics subject. Thanks to compulsory readings - analysed in class by the instructor and commented with the students - this module offers the methodological and analytical tools to understand ongoing regional processes. The module stimulates students' skills to apply IR approaches to regional processes. Students must read all compulsory readings before classes in order to intervene in the class debate.

Module 2 allows students to tackle specific aspects of Mediterranean Politics via oral presentations and written papers. This interactive method allows students to improve their analitical skills and their public speaking. This methodology strenghten students' oral expressive skills and their ability to express and defend their opinions. Mini-essays provide students with the capacity to elaborate original ideas and to develop a scientific approach able to combine theoretical and empirical aspects.
