• INFLUENZE BIZANTINE E ISLAMICHE NELLE FORME INSEDIATIVE URBANE E RURALE DELL'EUROPA MEDITERRANEA

  The course aims to promote knowledge of urban development in the Mediterranean area with particular reference to the experiences of Byzantine and Islamic Age, valuing the medieval heritage as a basic starting point for the definition of the modern city.

  The complexity of classical cities; analysis of cultural and topographic changes of early medieval town in contact with the spread of Christianity, with the defensive needs of the Byzantine period, and innovations related to the model of the Islamic madina. Main cities: Rome, Costaninople, Damasco, Baghdad, Caire, Kairouan

• LA SICILIA: I PROCESSI DI ACCULTURAZIONE E LE TRASFORMAZIONI DEL TERRITORIO DAL TARDO ANTICO AL BASSO MEDIOEVO

  The second module takes into account the urban transformations in the early medieval Sicily in the light of acculturation processes taking place in the island between the sixth and tenth centuries.
