Visual search produces original data, otherwise unobtainable, and today it is increasingly widespread to answer relevant research questions from both a cognitive and pragmatic point of view. This book shows how the use of visual methods is now indispensable to investigate the socio-cultural transformations taking place at a global level, to explore new phenomena, to raise new questions and provide plausible interpretations. The text traces the debate on visual sociology, showing how it is possible to study and use images in a rigorous way. Furthermore, it takes up considerations developed within visual anthropology, focusing on the role of images in building collaborative relationships between the researcher and the research subjects, who are personally involved in the subjective production of photographs or videos. This book is aimed at anyone who wishes to experiment with visual methods, primarily university students of social sciences. In each chapter you will find short summaries, definitions, boxes within the pages with in-depth analysis, activities to test yourself by experimenting in the field with what you are studying in an abstract way and key words to summarize the main concepts. Finally, the book crosses over online, where multimedia materials (texts, images, voices) are found to better convey the multisensory nature of which social research and daily experience are made, experimenting with less linear learning paths.
